It is difficult to get good depth of field effects in many situations. A common method used to supplement the DOF effect is to add a 2D blurring operation to the image. This blur is not exactly the proper DOF effect, but it has many uses especially in backgrounds with severe DOF blurring. The Confusion plugin computes the amount of blurring needed per pixel (technically, the "radius of the circle of confusion") to enhance Lightwave's DOF effect and outputs a greyscale image to be used as a key in compositing software. Alternatively, Confusion can apply the blur itself right in LightWave. Like any 2D DOF tool, this isn't effective in all situations, but it allows much more control in many shots, especially those that have to match DOF in compositing.
